The SS President Coolidge was originally a luxury passenger liner launched in 1931. During World War II, it was converted into a troop carrier. In 1942, while approaching Espiritu Santo, the Coolidge struck two mines, mistakenly laid by friendly forces. The captain, knowing the ship was doomed, managed to run it aground close to shore, saving the lives of most of the soldiers on board. The wreck has since become an artificial reef, teeming with marine life and a fascinating time capsule of wartime history. Diving the Coolidge offers a variety of experiences. Beginners can explore the shallower sections, marveling at the coral-encrusted exterior and the abundant fish life. More experienced divers can penetrate deeper into the wreck, discovering cargo holds filled with jeeps, trucks, and personal belongings of the soldiers.
